MPS Art Curriculum Progression EYFS to Y6
Art&Design/Design&Technology Curriculum Overview
Intent
At Mattersey Primary School we believe that teaching and learning in Art and Design is vital to stimulate creativity, imagination and inventiveness. The purpose of art and design education is to give pupils the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express responses to ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form. It fires their imagination and is a fundamental means of personal expression.
Our Art and Design curriculum provides pupils with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. It enables them to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form and pattern using a variety of different materials and processes. Pupils will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists and designers, as well as an understanding of the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Implementation
To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Art and Design we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school from EYFS to Year 6. Art and Design is taught as part of a half-termly topic focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum.
We have identified these key areas across which to develop our pupils’ knowledge and skills:
The cross-curricular approach ensures that children understand the context of the art and design work, as well as the artists and designers they are learning about. However, we sometimes will deliver discrete lessons depending on the planning cycle. This means we ensure we are giving our children opportunities to express their creative imagination and to practice the key processes of art. Teachers plan lessons for their class using our Art and Design progression documents. These documents ensure the curriculum is covered and the skills, concepts and knowledge taught are progressive from EYFS through to Key Stage 1 and then Key Stage 2. This is vital in our mixed age classes at Mattersey. We also use Access Art and other resources as a tool for supporting teachers’ subject knowledge, professional development and expertise in Art and Design.
Impact
Our Mattersey artists and designers will love using the knowledge and skills they have gained to express observations, imagination, feelings and emotions and produce art and design work of a high quality across the curriculum. They will use technical vocabulary accurately and become confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion of their own and other works of art. Classroom displays will reflect the children’s sense of pride in their work and the whole school environment will celebrate the children’s achievements in Art and Design.
Our progression documents include the key vocabulary and the impact of Art and Design for each year group (end points) as they progress through our school.
Hive Class visit the Harley Gallery- Art detective workshop
The Hive Class showed curiosity and respect on their visit to the Art Detective Workshop at the Harley Gallery- which incorporates history, art, and creative writing elements. The session focused on famous art crimes, including the theft of the Portland Tiara. First, pupils visited The Portland Collection museum to tour the exhibition and to see the empty display case which once held the tiara. Following this, the pupils relocated to the purpose built Education Studio. Through storytelling and paper crown making activities they explored the incredible story of the Portland Tiara, and used it as a jumping off point to think about the importance of saving and protecting treasures.
Remembrance Day November: Our Whole School piece of art using skills and techniques in photography, printing and painting. We have titled our art work, Peace is in our Hands.
